Abstrak

The research focuses on the analysis of translation techniques applied to metaphorical sentences in the subtitles of the movie Dead Poets Society. It utilizes Molina and Albir's framework for translation techniques and Nababan's model for assessing translation quality, specifically in terms of accuracy and readability. Newmark's (1988) theory is employed to categorize the types of metaphors found in the movie. The research follows a qualitative approach using a descriptive method, and data collection is conducted through Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The study aims to identify metaphor types, the translation techniques used, and the resulting translation quality. The findings reveal that the metaphors in the movie fall into several categories: dead metaphors (39%), cliché metaphors (81.94%), stock metaphors (28%), adapted metaphors (5%), recent metaphors (2%), and original metaphors (18%). In terms of translation techniques, the study identified the use of 10 different techniques, with literal translation being the most common (31%), followed by adaptation (17%), modulation (9%), amplification (7%), and others like linguistic compression, transposition, and borrowing, each appearing with lower frequencies. The FGD results suggest that many of the translations are either inaccurate or less accurate. Overall, the study concludes that the translation quality of metaphorical sentences in the subtitles is generally categorized as inaccurate.
