Abstrak

This study aims to analyze noun phrase types and translation techniques used in the abstracts of PNJ Mechanical Engineering undergraduate theses. A qualitative descriptive method was employed to assess 19 abstracts, resulting in 123 data points of noun phrases related to mechanical engineering terms, focusing on linguistic and translation analysis of sentence pairs in the source language (Indonesian) and the target language (English). The results reveal the dominance of modificative noun phrases (95%), reflecting the need for precision in technical terms. In contrast, coordinative noun phrases account for only 4%, and appositive ones for merely 1%. The primary translation techniques include pure borrowing (40%) for internationally standardized terms, followed by a combination of established equivalent and transposition (36%), and established equivalent alone (11%). Translation quality achieved a high level of accuracy, with 97% of the data rated accurate (average score of 2.96). The remaining 3% of inaccurate translations were due to conceptual misunderstandings and inconsistent equivalents. These results align with the characteristics of technical texts, which emphasize precision and efficiency.
