Translation Techniques and Accuracy of Wisdom Quotes in the Arcane Film

This research examines the techniques utilized and the accuracy of the translations of the wisdom quotes in the Riot Games game-adapted Arcane film. Qualitative descriptive research using focus group discussion and content analysis technique is the methodology employed. The categories for wisdom quotes are based on the theory of Richard M. Ryan and Edward L. Deci (1985) with 57% of these wisdom quotes fall into motivational quotes. Eight of the 18 translation techniques listed by Molina & Albir (2002) are applied when translating wisdom quotes. The most common technique, at 30.9%, is the modulation technique, which is followed by the adaptation technique at 23.6%. Less than 15% of time is spent using other techniques such as literal translation, amplification, transposition, reduction, borrowing, and generalization. Although there were still errors in both motivating and demotivating quotes, the majority of the data fulfilled the accuracy standards according to the theory of Nababan et al. (2012), which is the basis for the evaluation of translation accuracy. As a result, the average accuracy for both types of quotes were 2,9. In conclusion, with the correct translation technique, the wisdom quotes in the Arcane film are translated with accuracy, albeit some quotes could be improved.
