Abstrak

This study aims to analyze the relationship between illocutionary acts, translation techniques, and meaning shifts in the English subtitles of Tinggal Meninggal. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of 104 utterances containing illocutionary acts collected from the movie. The analysis was based on Searle's (1979) theory of illocutionary acts, Molina and Albir's (2002) translation techniques, and Nida and Taber”s (1969) meaning shift theory. The findings reveal that Expressive is the most dominant type of illocutionary act with 44 data (42.31%). A total of 184 translation techniques were identified, with Modulation as the most frequently used technique (49 occurrences or 26.63%). In terms of meaning shifts, No Shift is the most dominant category with 42 data (40.38%). The findings also show that the choice of translation technique influences the occurrence of meaning shifts. Amplification tends to produce Gain of Information, Reduction is commonly associated with Loss of Information, while Modulation generally preserves the original meaning but may also result in Skewing of Information, depending on the translation context. The findings indicate that illocutionary acts, translation techniques, and meaning shifts are closely related in the subtitle translation process. The type of illocutionary act influences the translator's choice of translation technique, and the selected technique affects whether the original meaning and communicative intention are preserved or shifted. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between illocutionary acts, translation techniques, and meaning shifts in audiovisual subtitle translation.
