Abstrak

As one of the global streaming platforms, Netflix offers a wide range of Englishlanguage shows that drive the need for accurate and easy-to-understand subtitles. Along with this, translating idioms is a challenge due to its high cultural content. Therefore, it is important to understand the context and select appropriate translation techniques. This descriptive-qualitative study aims to analyze the types of idioms, idiom translation strategies, and aspects of acceptability in the subtitles of the first season of The Crown series produced by Netflix. A total of 84 data were categorized as idioms and collected through content analysis and focus group discussions (FGD). Referring to the classification of idioms according to Adelnia and Dastjerdi (2011), the most common type of idiom found is colloquialism with 51 data (60.70%) followed by allusion with 17 data (20.20%), phrasal verb with 12 data (14.30%) and the least is slang with 4 data (4.80%). The translation strategies employed refer to Baker's theory (2011), with the most dominant strategy was translation by paraphrase with a frequency of 73 data and a percentage of 87.00%. Then, the omission of a play on idiom strategy with a frequency of 9 data and a percentage of 10.70%. The least employed translation strategies were using an idiom of similar meaning and form and omission of entire idiom. Both have the same frequency, which is 1 data out of a total of 84 data, or 1.10%. The translation acceptability score shows 36 data (42.80%) are considered acceptable, 17 data
(20.20%) are less acceptable, and 31 data (37.00%) are unacceptable. Based on the parameters of Nababan et al. (2012), these results reflect moderate acceptability. This study shows that Netflix, as a global platform, still faces challenges in maintaining the acceptability of idioms in the subtitles aired in Indonesia.
