ABSTRACT
This study analyzes the translation of phatic expressions in the subtitles of the 2019 film Marriage Story, focusing on their categories, functions, translation techniques, and acceptability in Indonesian. The research identifies 11 categories of phatic expressions, with responses and discourse markers being the most common. The dominant function is expressive, reflecting the emotional depth of the film. The study uses Kinneavy’s (2009) theory for phatic functions, Biber’s (1999) framework for categorizing expressions, and Molina and Albir’s (2002) model for translation techniques. The most common technique is established equivalence. The acceptability of the translations is generally high, based on Nababan et al.’s (2012) framework. This research contributes to the understanding of audiovisual translation, especially in maintaining emotional and cultural authenticity in film subtitles.
