ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES, ACCURACY, ACCEPTABILITY, AND READABILITY ON CULTURAL TERMS IN THE SUBTITLE OF FILM BUMI MANUSIA

This study analyzes translation techniques, and translation quality on cultural terms in the subtitles of the film "Bumi Manusia," an Indonesian film directed by Hanung Bramantyo. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with content analysis and focus group discussion approaches. The classification of these categories of cultural terms refers to Newmark’s (1988) theory. The most frequent category found in this subtitle is socio-cultural category (39.6%). In terms of translation techniques, eight of the eighteen techniques identified by Molina & Albir (2002) were used in the film’s subtitles, with calque translation being the most common (41.5%), followed by literal translation technique (34%) and description technique (7.5%). Other techniques like generalization technique, transposition technique, linguistic amplification technique, borrowing technique, and reduction technique were used less frequently due to their complexity and the risk of deviating from the original meaning. The evaluation of translation quality based on Nababan et al.'s (2012) theory resulted in an average accuracy of 2.6, acceptability of 2.6, and readability of 2.6, indicating that most of the data met accuracy, acceptability, and readability standards, although some sentences still lacked detail and were unclear in meaning. In conclusion, the cultural terms subtitle in "Bumi Manusia" has appropriate translation techniques and quality.
