Abstrak

Songs are a form of literary work deeply embedded with cultural elements, yet they are easily enjoyed and integrated into everyday life. Adele, a renowned international artist, is famous for her ballad songs, which are known for their poetic language and use of idiomatic expressions to enhance their beauty and meaning. However, since Adele's songs are in English, they can be difficult for non-native speakers to fully understand. Platforms like Musixmatch help overcome this barrier by providing song lyrics and their translations in various languages, allowing a broader audience and listener to appreciate the songs' meanings. This study examines the shifts in meaning of idiomatic expressions in the lyrics of Adele's album "30" and evaluates the quality of their Indonesian translations on Musixmatch. The study aims to identify idiomatic expressions using Makkai's theory (1972), compare them with the Indonesian translations on Musixmatch, analyze the shifts in meaning based on the theory of Nida and Taber (1975), and assess the translation quality using Nababan's (2012) parameters for accuracy and readability. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach according to Spradley’s (1980) analytical model. The research identifies 57 idiomatic expressions: 51 Phrasal Verb Idioms, making them the most prevalent, 2 Tournure Idioms, 2 Incorporating Verb Idioms, 1 Phrasal Compound Idiom, and 1 Pseudo Idiom. The analysis reveals two main types of meaning shifts: loss of information and skewing of information, with 81% of cases showing significant information loss. The translation quality, evaluated through focus group discussions involving raters, scores an average of 2.77 for accuracy and 2.84 for readability, indicating that the translations are generally accurate and understandable.
