ANALYSIS ON SUBTITLING STRATEGIES OF CULTURAL TERMS TRANSLATION IN NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES “GADIS KRETEK”

Audiovisual translation, particularly subtitling, plays a crucial role in bridging
cultural gaps for global audiences by ensuring that local expressions and culturally�bound references are accessible across different languages. The globalization of media content has significantly increased the demand for accurate and culturally sensitive subtitles, highlighting the importance of examining how cultural nuances are conveyed through translation. This study investigates the translation of cultural terms in the subtitles of the Netflix Original Series "Gadis Kretek." The objectives are to (1) identify and classify the types of cultural terms according to Newmark's (2017) categorization, (2) analyze the subtitling strategies employed based on Pedersen's (2011) framework, and (3) evaluate the translation accuracy, using Nababan et al. (2012) criterion. A descriptive qualitative method was used, with analysis grounded in Spradley’s (1980) model. The study identified 206 data of cultural terms, with Social Culture being the most prevalent, comprising 136 data (66.01%). This is followed by Material Culture with 45 data (21.85%), Organization with 17 data (8.25%), and Ecology with 8 data (3.89%). This study found six subtitling strategies: retention, specification, direct translation, generalization, substitution, and omission. Direct translation was the most frequently used strategy with 127 data (61.65%), while the specification is the least used with 3 data (1.46%). The evaluation of translation quality, particularly in terms of accuracy, was conducted through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD). This process revealed that the overall translation quality of cultural terms in the subtitles of the Netflix Original Series “Gadis Kretek” is classified as accurate, with an average score of 2.93.
