Analysis of Translation Techniques and Quality of Idioms in the Movie Megamind on Vidio Streaming Platform

Digital media, especially streaming platforms, are becoming more popular in Indonesia, with Gen Z preferring them over cinemas for convenience and lower costs. Vidio, a local streaming platform, has grown rapidly, competing with global giants like Netflix and Disney+. As English movies gain popularity, the demand for quality subtitles rises, highlighting the importance of translators in accurately and readably conveying cultural nuances, particularly in idioms, by first understanding the context and choosing the right translation technique. This descriptive-qualitative research aims to analyze the types of idioms, translation techniques, and the accuracy and readability of idiom translations in the subtitles of the movie Megamind provided by Vidio as one of the animated movie options available to its customers. The data is collected through content analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Following Fernando’s (2016) theory, 91 date are classified into three types of idioms. In addition, the researcher identifies 7 translation techniques employed by Vidio’s subtitlers based on the theory of Molina et al. (2002). The most frequently employed technique is established equivalence, found in 56 data out of the total data. The average accuracy score for the idiom translations is 2.76, and the readability score is 2.93. According to Nababan et al.’s (2012) accuracy and readability parameters, these scores indicate that the idiom translations in this study are generally accurate and readable. This study shows that Vidio, a local and legal streaming platform, provides accurate and readable subtitles, especially for animated comedy films like Megamind.
