ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION QUALITY ON LOSS AND GAIN INFORMATION IN GOVERNMENT NEWS ON THE CABINET SECRETARIAT OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA

This study aims to analyze the occurrence of loss and gain of information based on Bassnett-McGuire’s theory and its translation quality in the aspect of accuracy in Government News on The Cabinet Secretariat of The Republic of Indonesia's official website. In addition, this study also analyses the structure sentence changes, based on Chesterman’s theory (1997), which is one of the causes of loss and gain. This study uses qualitative descriptive as the method and in three sequence steps; 1) The researcher reads the government news sentence by sentence, 2) identifies the sentences that have loss and gain, and 3) classifies the sentence types. The results of this study are 121 data from 30 government news reports. The finding for loss and gain showed that there were three forms; they are loss of information found in 75 data (60%), gain of information found in 42 data (34%), and loss and gain of information found in 6 data (6%). Meanwhile, structure change showed that from 123 data news sentences analyzed by the researcher, 81 data have changes in sentence structure and it forms 10 patterns. There are also 42 data unchanged in sentence structure (which means that the type of sentence in SL is the same as in TL) and it forms 10 patterns. Thus, the study indicates that the use of loss and gain in news text aims to achieve naturalness in translation. In addition, the use of loss of information also aims to condense information, while gain of information provides additional information from the translator which aims to clarify the translation.
