Abstrak
Presidential speeches are a crucial medium in political communication, often containing connotative meanings to shape image and build emotional connection with the audience. This research aims to identify the types of connotative meanings in President Prabowo Subianto's speeches published on the Setkab RI website, analyze the translation techniques used in their English versions, and evaluate the translation quality in terms of accuracy. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques through content analysis and focused group discussions (FGD) involving two professional raters. Data was analyzed using Hook's (1975) theory of connotative meaning, Molina & Albir's (2002) classification of translation techniques, and Nababan et al.'s (2012) translation quality scale. The findings reveal that out of 98 connotative phrases, the majority fall into the positive connotative category (46%), followed by neutral (32%), and negative (22%). The most frequently used translation techniques are modulation, established equivalent, and calque. Overall, the translation quality is quite good, but some shifts in connotative meaning were found due to the choice of translation techniques affecting the level of accuracy. A shift in connotative meaning occurs, for example, when a negative connotative meaning shifts to a positive connotative meaning. This occurs because translators tend to choose more positive equivalents in order to maintain the image in a political context. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexity of translating connotative meanings in the context of political speeches.
