Abstrak

This study discusses the acronym translations generated by the automatic translation feature in caption @Kumparan on TikTok. This study focuses on three aspects: the type of acronyms, translation techniques, and translation quality, particularly in accuracy and acceptability aspects. Theories applied in this study are, theory of Finoza (2006) regarding type of acronyms, teory of Molina and Albir (2002) regarding tranlastion techniques, and theory of Nababan et al (2012) regarding translation quality assessment, particularly accuracy and acceptability aspects. This study utilizes descriptive qualitative methods and content analysis as the technique of data collecting. The results of this study reveal that the most frequent type of acronym is proper name with initial capital, the second frequent is non-proper name with all lowercase, and the least frequent is proper name with all capital. Moreover, the translation techniques observed in this study are ranked from the most to the least dominant: borrowing, established equivalent, reduction, established equivalent and borrowing, generalization, and variation. Furthermore, the accuracy aspect for the acronym translations is categorized as less accurate and the acceptability aspect for the acronym translations is categorized as unacceptable.
