Analysis of Translation Techniques and Translation Accuracy of Expressive Utterances in the Subtitle of Interstellar Movie

This study aims to identify the translation techniques and translation quality in the aspect of accuracy in the subtitle of “Interstellar” movie. The data were collected by content analysis and validated by the raters through Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Analyzed through a descriptive qualitative method based on expressive utterances theory by Searle (1976). The writer found 90 data of expressive utterances in the “Interstellar” movie. The analysis result shows that there are 11 techniques applied in the translation of expressive utterances, those are literal translation, reduction, transposition, established equivalent, calque, modulation, amplification, linguistic compression, discursive creation, adaptation, and pure borrowing. Based on the assessment of translation quality, the level of accuracy is considered less accurate with a score of 1.96.
