THE TRANSLATION ACCURACY OF FINANCIAL TERMS IN JASON BARON’S THE VISUAL MBA: A QUICK GUIDE TO EVERYTHING YOU’LL LEARN IN TWO YEARS OF BUSINESS SCHOOL

The present study is designed to assess the accuracy of financial term translation contained in the graphic book by Jason Baron entitled The Visual MBA: A Quick Guide to Everything You’ll Learn in Two Years of Business School. This study adopted the descriptive qualitative method and collected 100 data through a documentation technique and discussed in a focus group discussion. The data were analyzed using Spradley’s data analysis method, consisting of domain, taxonomic, componential, and cultural theme analysis. The findings show that the financial terms are classified into three types, which are corporate finance in 75 data, followed by investment in 23 data and institutions & markets in 2 data. Besides, the translation techniques found in this study are established equivalent, literal translation, discursive creation, pure borrowing, amplification, reduction, transposition, particularization, generalization, calque, and description. There are also three combinations of two techniques, i.e. combination of pure borrowing and adaptation, combination of adaptation and transposition, and combination of established equivalent and description. Meanwhile, the translation techniques dominantly applied in translating those financial terms from English to Indonesian are established equivalent, applying for 56 data, followed by literal translation at 13 data and discursive creation at 8 data. These techniques practically influence the translation accuracy, resulting in an accuracy score of 2.62 based on the instrument of translation accuracy assessment. It can be concluded that the translation of financial terms in Jason Baron’s The Visual MBA: A Quick Guide to Everything You’ll Learn in Two Years of Business School is quite accurate.
