ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND ACCURACY ON CULTURAL TERMS IN THE SUBTITLE OF FILM TENGGELAMNYA KAPAL VAN DER WIJCK

This research discusses translation techniques on cultural terms (theory of Molina and Albir) and its translation
qualities (theory of Nababan) in the aspect of accuracy in the subtitle film “Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck”. C.
Kluckhohn’s theory are being used to analyze the category of cultural terms. This research is qualitative research by
using descriptive method. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is being used to collect the data which then are being
analyzed by Spradley’s theory. The purpose of this research are to identify cultural terms, translation techniques, and
translation quality in the subtitles of the film Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck. The result of this research found 4
categories of cultural terms which are ecology (4 data or 5.56%), material (59 data or 81.94%), socio-cultural (6 data
or 8.33%), and company (3 data or 4.17%). There were 11 translation techniques which are being used when
translating the cultural terms, are established equivalent (29 data or 40.28%), pure borrowing (13 data or 18.06%),
generalization (11 data or 15.28%), modulation (6 data or 6.94%), adaptation (4 data or 5.56%), reduction (3 data or
4.17%), literal translation (2 data or 2.78%), linguistic amplification (1 data or 1.39%), linguistic compression (1 data
or 1.39%), and transposition (1 data or 1.39%). The Focus Group Discussion (FGD) results show that the translation
of cultural terms in the film's subtitles of Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck is mostly accurate, although there are
some less accurate of inaccurate. Overall, the translated message effectively conveys meaning in the target language.
