TRANSLATION TECHNIQUES AND SHIFTS OF CONCEPTUAL METAPHORS IN THE OPEN CAPTIONS (OC) OF PRABOWO SUBIANTO’S SPEECHES ON THE KOMPASTV YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Conceptual metaphors are commonly used in political speeches to convey abstract ideas through more concrete expressions. However, in the context of translation, conceptual metaphors present their own challenges because translators are not only required to convey the meaning from the source language to the target language, but also to maintain the metaphorical message contained within. During the translation process, translators employ various translation techniques and adjustments to ensure that it sounds natural and acceptable in the target language, considering the differences in linguistic structure between the source and target languages. Therefore, these adjustments are very important to analyze in order to understand how metaphorical meaning is maintained and adapted. Based on this issue, this study aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors, the translation techniques applied, and the translation shifts found in the Indonesian open captions (OC) of Prabowo Subianto’s English speech on the KompasTV YouTube channel. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, 86 data of conceptual metaphors were identified, analyzed, and examined using the theories of Lakoff & Johnson (1980), Molina & Albir (2002), and Catford (1965). The analysis results show that structural metaphors are the most dominant type (53.5%), followed by ontological (30.2%) and orientational (16.3%) metaphors, while literal translation is the most frequently used technique (45.7%) and structural shifts dominate the types of translation shifts found (76%). These findings indicate that translators tend to maintain the metaphorical meaning of the source language while making the needed structural adjustments to produce a translation that is clear, equivalent, and sounds natural in Indonesian.
