Abstrak

This study aims to analyze the subtitling strategies and sociopragmatics meanings of cultural terms contained in the original Sundanese dialogue and English subtitles of the film Nana (Before, Now & Then). The focus of this study is on cultural terms classified by categories from Newmark’s (1988) theory, subtitling strategies based on Gottlieb’s (1992) theory, and sociopragmatics aspects from Thomas’s (1983) concept. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data collection was conducted using the content analysis method. The results show that within the analyzed cultural terms, the material culture category is the most dominant with 24 data. In terms of subtitling strategies, transfer is the most frequently used strategy with 47 data, while paraphrase is the least used with only 4 data. From a sociopragmatics perspective, the selection of these subtitling strategies and cultural terms consistently interacts to reconstruct and maintain the politeness values, power relations, and social distance of the characters, ensuring cultural authenticity for international audiences.

Keywords: cultural terms; Nana (Before, Now & Then); sociopragmatics meanings; subtitling strategies
