Abstrak

Activated Methyldiethanolamine (aMDEA) is a commonly used amine solvent in natural gas purification processes to absorb acid gases such as CO₂ and H₂S. Over extended operation, aMDEA degrades in quality due to the accumulation of contaminants such as sodium ions (Na⁺), Heat Stable Salts (HSS), and heavy metals, which cannot be removed through conventional regeneration methods. This degradation results in reduced CO₂ absorption efficiency, increased solution viscosity, and a higher risk of corrosion in equipment. This study aims to design and fabricate an Amine Reclaiming Unit using the ion exchange method, consisting of two ion exchange vessels (anion and cation) constructed in accordance with ASME Section VIII Division 1. The main material used is stainless steel 316, selected for its corrosion resistance against aMDEA exposure. The piping system is constructed using tubing and PVC pipes for various fluid lines. The unit was tested using dye penetrant examination and ultrasonic thickness measurement. The fabrication results indicate that the unit meets the required thickness and corrosion resistance standards, with an estimated service life of up to 20 years. This reclaiming unit is expected to serve as an effective solution for purifying degraded aMDEA, reducing the need for new amine consumption, and improving operational efficiency at PT Badak NGL.
