Abstrak

This study aims to analyze the translation techniques and the acceptability of metaphor terms in the headlines of the 2024 Presidential Election on the news portal Kompas.com. The focus of this research is to identify the types of metaphors used, the translation techniques applied, and to assess the acceptability of the translations within the cultural context of the target language. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through content analysis of headlines that were automatically translated from Indonesian to English. The metaphors are classified using Lakoff & Johnson’s (1980) theory, while the translation techniques are analyzed based on Molina and Albir’s (2002) theory. The acceptability of the translations is evaluated using Nababan’s (2012) assessment instrument. The results show that out of 100 data samples, ontological metaphors dominate with 68%, followed by structural metaphors at 20%, and orientational metaphors at 12%. The most frequently used translation techniques are literal translation (38%) and established equivalence (35%). The acceptability assessment reveals that the majority of the translations are categorized as "less acceptable," with an average score of 2.03. Unnatural and uncommon terms in English were the main factors affecting acceptability. This study is expected to provide additional insights for translators and further research on translation techniques and the quality of metaphor translation in political news.
