Abstrak

This study is to analysis the translation techniques and readability of verb phrase in the subtitle of Avatar Live-Action. The study is to categorized the type of modalities of the verb phrase based on the theory of Palmer (1990) and Alwi (1992). The translation techniques were using theory from Molina and Albir (2002). The translation quality was using the theory by Nababan (2012). This study using a descriptive qualitative method. Focus Group Discussion was used to collect data which then analyzed. The aims of this research are to find out the type of modality in verb phrase, translation techniques, and translation quality in the subtitle of Avatar Live-Action. The result of this research found that epistemic modality with 34 data, deontic modality with 25 data, and dynamic modality with 16. The translation techniques used to translate verb phrase with modality were: 1) Reduction with 31% data, 2) Literal Translation with 18% data, 3) Reduction and Amplification with 5% data, 4) Generalization with 5% data, 5) Amplification with 4% data, 6) Literal Translation and Transposition with 3% data, 7) Reduction and Transposition with 2% data, 8) Reduction and Linguistic Compression with 2% data, 9) Established Equivalent with 1% data, 10) Reduction and Established Equivalent with 1% data, 11) Amplification and Generalization with 1% data, 12) Modulation with 1% data, and 13) Literal Translation and Linguistic Compression with 1% data. The result of the Forum Group Discussion (FGD) shows that the translation of verb phrase with modality in the subtitle of Avatar Live-Action is readable within a total score of 2,81. Overall, the verb phrase with modality in the subtitle of the Avatar Live-Action is easily understood by the viewer.
