Abstrak

Western movies are always interesting for Indonesian people to watch. However, there are still many Indonesian people who cannot speak English. Indonesian subtitle is the solution in order to bridge the communication between Western movies and Indonesian viewers. The subtitling translators do not only translate the words in the movie but also convey the meaning behind every sentence, especially for the interrogative sentence. In order to find out the meaning behind the interrogative sentence, the subtitle translator must understand the context first, then determine the appropriate translation technique to produce an accurate translation. This descriptive-qualitative research aims to analyze the types and pragmatic functions of interrogative sentences, translation techniques, and the accuracy of the interrogative sentences’ translations in the subtitles of the first two episodes of the WandaVision series through content analysis and focus group discussion. The results of this study found 130 data classified into 3 types of interrogative sentences based on Quirk et al. (1985): Yes-no questions, WH questions, and Alternative Questions. The data are also classified into 2 pragmatic functions of interrogative sentences by Larson (1998): the real function and the rhetorical function. In translating these interrogative sentences, the translator uses 12 translation techniques by Molina & Albir (2002), with three techniques dominating: established equivalent, reduction, and literal translation. The average of the accuracy of the translation of interrogative sentences is 2.69 that if reviewed based on the accuracy parameters by Nababan (2012), this score indicates that interrogative sentences in this study overall have been translated accurately.
