Abstrak

This study analyze the translation of adjectives, translation shifts, and translation acceptability in the top eight most popular destinations featured on the Wonderful Indonesia website. The research aims to identify the types of adjectives used, analyze the translation shifts applied in transferring Indonesian adjectives into English, and evaluate the acceptability of the translated texts. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using content analysis and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with bilingual raters to ensure validity.
The findings reveal that all five types of adjectives based on Alwi (2003) were identified, physical condition, quality/evaluation, colour, psychological/emotional, and social/evaluative adjectives, with quality/evaluation adjectives being the most dominant. A total of 134 adjective instances were identified, with 126 involving translation shifts. Among the shift types proposed by Catford (1965), structure shift appeared most frequently, followed by level shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift.
In terms of translation quality, the results indicate a high level of acceptability, with 87.31% of the data categorized as acceptable, 8.96% as less acceptable, and 3.73% as unacceptable. The overall average score of 2.61 suggests that the translations are generally natural, fluent, and appropriate for the target audience. The study concludes that translation shifts are essential in adapting linguistic and cultural differences between Indonesian and English, particularly in tourism texts. However, careful application is necessary to maintain both naturalness and the evaluative nuances of the source language. This research contributes to translation studies and provides practical insights for improving tourism translation quality.
